Who am I?

I am just beginning this blog, although I registered at this site some time ago. I am interested primarily in the following topics: politics, books, literary criticism. I am 55, a recent empty-nester who has sent 5 children out into the world. My husband owns his own textile quality-control business, with laboratories in Salt Lake City, Utah; Frauenfeld, Thurgau, Switzerland; and Hang Zhou, China. Although I live in Salt Lake City, I was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and still retain characteristics of a Southern gal.

Politics: I do not pretend to know details on why things are as they are, nor do I have a firm grasp of policy, economics, or foreign and domestic affairs. However, I do think I have decent radar for what I call the "nonsense factor" in politics, i.e. recognizing the spin in the lines our politician offer us. So, in any political blog entry of mine, the opinions and commentary are mine, except where I might import a quotation to comment on.

Books:  If I don’t read at least five books a week,  I consider the week wasted.  It is easier to list what I won’t read that what I am interested in.  I will not! read anything in the genre "romance." I enjoy mysteries (not hard-boiled) for relaxation, and my passion is books about books.

Literary Criticism: I recently earned a Ph.D. in languages and literature (comparative literature, with focus on German and Polish post-World War II poetry). Before I began my studies,  I though literary criticism was just so much pompous blathering. However, now I enjoy reading a book or poem for what lies underneath and in between the words of the author.
